Children are naturally curious creatures and with so many under one roof coupled with the fact that we homeschool, we are frequently looking things up to answer the various questions that arise. For instance, the children found that one of the chickens had laid an egg the size of a cherry tomato. We looked it up and found out that such an egg occurs on occasion, that there is no yolk inside and that they are called – by some – fairy eggs.

We learned in an editing exercise this week that an individual banana is called a finger, a grouping of bananas is called a hand and several hands make up a bunch.
We had a keyboard when I was a kid that had a demonstration song that we liked to play (usually while pretending the play the keyboard as if we were the one playing the demo song). While listening to the radio this week, I heard the demo song! It’s Mendelssohn’s Spring Song.
Reading further into ‘Our Birds and Their Nestlings’, we came to the Kingbird. I’d head of the Kingbird but didn’t know much about it. It was a very entertaining bird to read about from how it beats insects to death in order to feed them to their young to how they attack anything that comes into its territory. Even the march larger eagles! In fact, they will sometimes ride on the backs of the larger bird pecking them in the back of the head. Their scientific name is Tyrannus Tyrannus and the plural of this bird is called a Tyranny. Haha! This is the most entertaining bird.
They also cough up their undigestible food in the form of pellets like owls.
Finally, my daughter had to dissect an earthworm for biology. They have a lot of parts inside!
