This feast day is to commemorate the fact that God made Mary without original sin in order to have for himself a little sinless home in his Mother’s womb. Some balk at this teaching but it has always made perfect sense to me for a couple of reasons.
- God made Adam and Eve without sin. (It wasn’t until they fell that sin was introduced into humanity and passed down through their original sin.) So, if God made the first Eve without sin, I think it logically followed that he could and would make the new Eve without sin.
- The Old Ark of the Covenant was specially made to carry Aaron’s staff, some manna and the 10 Commandments, how much more specially made would God make the New Ark of the Covenant that would carry Him? And since sin separates us from God, it logically followed that God would make his New Ark without sin so that he would not be separated from his own mother as she carried Him within her.
- The Archangel Gabriel greeted Mary with “Hail, full of Grace,” – a greeting that doesn’t make sense unless she was full of grace which would mean to be without sin.
- Mary, too, needed a savior. Jesus just saved her in a different way. I like the way Steve Ray put it: In order to save most of humanity, Christ had to pull us out of the mud. But to save his mother, he chose instead to cover the mud as she walked over it, keeping her Immaculate. To me, that sounds like a good son. And who could be a better son than God?
See? It all makes sense! Happy Feast of the Immaculate Conception!
