This book is a collection of about 44 essays on subjects ranging from the common man to necromancy to Elizabeth Barrett Browning to nudism to match making historical figures and how they’re getting together may have changed history. Needless to say, I got a very well-rounded and entertaining education reading this book.
Some of the essays were time and location specific, so I had to look up the person or persons he was writing about. This sometimes led down interesting rabbit holes, like finding out about the writing of Walter de la Mere.
A couple of the essays were a little on the slower side for me, probably because I’m an American woman living in the 21st century and they were very specific about what was going on back in his day in England. For the most part, however, I found the majority of the essays to be typical Chesterton: witty and funny, filled with common sense and a lot of fun to read. His wisdom can not be overstated and this book exposes the reader to a lot of said wisdom. I would definitely recommend this book, if you can find it.
