Children are naturally curious creatures and with so many under one roof coupled with the fact that we homeschool, we are frequently looking things up to answer the various questions that arise. For instance, the children found that one of the chickens had laid an egg the size of a cherry tomato. We looked it up and found out that such an egg occurs on occasion, that there is no yolk inside and that they are called – by some – fairy eggs.
Here are some other fairy eggs we found this week:
- Several of the kids wondered why we can eat fish on Fridays but not other kinds of meat since fish is a kind of meat. Rev. Michael A. Van Sloun was kind enough to provide an answer.
- In Science, we learned that ice is the only solid that floats in its own liquid (in nature). This is an amazing and very necessary design by God because without it, the living creatures in water would die during winter because the water would freeze bottom up. And the polar ice caps would sink to the bottom of the ocean. And the bottom of the ocean would never unfreeze since it’s not exposed to sunlight so we wouldn’t have a creepy, deep water sea creatures.
- In the newest reading from our read aloud entitled Our Birds and Their Nestlings by Margaret Walker, we learned that Blue Jays –heretofore my favorite bird – eat the babies of other birds. They also eat hummingbirds. I always knew they were loud and bossy, but had no idea about their less conspicuous savagery. My son said simply, “I don’t think I like Blue Jays anymore.” We looked it up and eating baby birds is not a common thing for them to do, but do it, they do. However, they are a great alarm system for our chickens and are so beautiful and according to this article, the bird eating is very rare. Maybe I can overlook a few of their terrifying imperfections.
